A Better App for Airbnb Hosts Aims to Make Every Stay Homier - Wired

A Better App for Airbnb Hosts Aims to Make Every Stay Homier - Wired | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Airbnb’s smartphone apps just got a fairly major facelift. The redesign, rolling out for both iPhone and Android, will make the process of finding a place much prettier–search results now have full-width pictures instead of dinky thumbnails, and each listing gets its own travel mag-style page that stylishly mixes photos, reviews, and nuts-and-bolts info. The biggest component of the upgrade, though, is something many Airbnb users probably won’t ever see. It’s a totally new mobile command center for the company’s hosts. But even if travelers don’t use it themselves, it stands to make the Airbnb experience better for everyone involved.

The Sharing Econonomy « Annotary Blog

The Sharing Econonomy « Annotary Blog | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

You know that phenomenon where you hear about something for the first time ever, and then suddenly it’s everywhere? It happened just recently for me with Peers, a grassroots organization that supports the sharing economy through education and promotion of peer-to-peer sharing networks. First a friend sent me a petition, organized by Peers, to stand up for AirBnB’s right to conduct business in New York City. Then I came across a blog post on the website of branding agency BBMG which interviewed Peers founders about the sharing movement. The next day on the subway, I overheard three women talking about the Peers dinner they had just come from where they’d met to discuss the sharing economy movement. Suddenly Peers and the idea of this so-called “sharing economy” was everywhere! I decided to do some research.

#Airbnb’s Woes Show How Far the #Sharing Economy Has Come | TIME.com

#Airbnb’s Woes Show How Far the #Sharing Economy Has Come | TIME.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Sharing economy companies have an obvious incentive to make peace. Operating under the threat of fines, lawsuits and shutdown is not exactly a good long-term strategy or a magnet for investment. Earlier this year, Lyft happened to take $60 million in funding while Airbnb took $120 million. Venture capitalists that put up that kind of money surely want any uncertainty resolved. Many sharing economy companies have had to nimbly react to potential scandals, including Airbnb which created a $1 million guarantee against property damage after one incident garnered widespread attention.

Until recently, online room rental service Airbnb resisted efforts to regulate its booming business. When cities tried to get the company to collect hotel taxes, the response was essentially this: Your laws are outdated and don’t apply to innovative businesses like ours.

Why commercial p2p sharing companies like AirBnB and Uber need to be regulated

The Randian, simplistic free-market thoughtlessness behind the wave of “peer-to-peer” companies, and especially those who are trying to uproot regulations that protect consumers, is far from the wave of the future: it’s hucksterism masquerading as progress, hubris as vision, callous selfishness as community-mindedness, and it’s a disaster waiting to happen.
